Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured tissues. This form of treatment utilizes radial shockwave therapy, where pressure waves disperse outward from the applicator into the targeted tissue. It is commonly used in musculoskeletal care to treat chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions.
How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
Shockwave therapy delivers targeted acoustic waves into the affected tissue. Compressed air accelerates a small projectile within the handpiece, which strikes the applicator tip and produces mechanical pressure waves that are transmitted into the tissue. Research supports that it can:

-
Stimulate a localized healing response
-
Improve blood flow to the area
-
Reduce pain in chronic tendinopathies

These effects help encourage tissue recovery in areas where healing has slowed or become persistent.

What is Shockwave Therapy Used For?
Shockwave therapy is commonly used for chronic or stubborn musculoskeletal conditions, including:

-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Achilles tendinopathy
-
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
-
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
-
Rotator cuff tendinopathy
-
Patellar tendinopathy
-
Calcific shoulder tendinitis
-
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

It is often recommended when pain has persisted for several months or has not responded fully to traditional conservative care.
